Frequently Asked Questions
My previous education is in a different school system (i.e., British, Kenyan, etc.). Will I be able to adjust?
Yes. Rosslyn Academy is an international school that welcomes students from many different educational backgrounds. Students who enter Rosslyn from other school systems adjust smoothly, both academically and socially. These students have performed strongly on our entrance tests (Stanford Achievement Tests).
How is the US school system different from other school systems?
In the US system, the teacher is not seen as the one imparting knowledge, but rather the facilitator of learning. The teacher is likely to use several learning style techniques such as working with partners or in small groups, simulations and role-plays, class discussions, learning centers and other techniques. The use of lecture is kept to a minimum to allow more direct student engagement.
The assessment system is also different. Rather than working towards one conclusive, comprehensive exam, the US system gives smaller exams throughout the course. Students are expected to be prepared for quizzes given at any time. Students are also expected to complete assignments and projects on a regular basis. The emphasis is on internalization and application of the material rather than memorization. The final grade is based on the average of all assignments, not only exams.
Teachers are very approachable and welcome questions and discussion. Teachers also value interaction with students both in and out of the classroom setting. This kind of relationship with a teacher might be different than what a student is accustomed to coming from a different system.
What are the average class sizes per grade?
Although we are double- or triple- streamed at every grade level from K-12, we keep individual class sizes small to provide an optimal teacher to student ratio in every classroom. Kindergarten classes have a maximum of 18 students per classroom. Younger elementary from Grades 1-4 have no more than 20 students per class, and upper elementary and middle school grades 5-8 are capped at 24 students per class.
High school classes typically range 20-25 students in larger classes, and many electives and special programs provide even smaller class sizes to maximize student and teacher interaction. Our independent study program pairs an advanced student on a tailored project with a single teacher.
Is there an ELL program?
Yes, we have an excellent ELL program for students for whom English is a second language, with specialists at different grade levels. Generally, ELL students find they are ready to exit the ELL program within one year of arriving at Rosslyn.
Do you have programs for Special Needs students?
Yes, we have a Resource program that serves students with mission status who have mild to moderate learning disabilities. Students with special needs who have mission status are accepted into Rosslyn provided that space is available in the Resource program. IEPs and testing should be submitted along with the application forms.
Rosslyn Academy unfortunately does not have services for children with behavioral, emotional or severe learning difficulties.
What are Rosslyn Academy's behavioral expectations?
Rosslyn has a no tolerance policy concerning illegal drug, alcohol and tobacco use on campus. Our students also sign a covenant statement upon admission to Rosslyn and are asked to apply Biblical principles to their lives at all times.
How is Rosslyn accredited?
Does Rosslyn offer the International Baccalaureate program?
No, Rosslyn instead offers the more modular Advanced Placement program, which allows students to take college-level classes in subjects where they excel. Most four-year colleges in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and colleges in over 60 other countries give students college credit, advanced placement, or both based on their AP Exam scores. This affords our students the opportunity to move into upper level courses, pursue a double-major and study abroad.
We offer a broad range of AP courses including Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, English, French, Physics, Studio Art, U.S. History, World History, and European History.
Does Rosslyn offer the SAT or ACT standardized tests?
Yes, we are the testing site for the SAT exam three times per year and the ACT exam twice per year. Registration for the SAT is done only through Frise Holdings, 1st floor, Professional Centre, Ngong Road, Nairobi. Registration for the ACT is done online at http://www.actstudent.org.
