Glory be to God

The A football team’s first game against RVA this season was a good one. The score of the game doesn’t reflect the energy and effort that each one of us brought to the field. We played smart and we played the best together as a team that we have all season. There were many close chances for us at the goal, but today was not our day to finish first, but to finish strong for our team mates. The second half of the game, after we were down, brought some amazing performances by Alexandra and Eunice and the entire team fought to win the ball and finish strong. Mostly the team is thankful for no injuries (since we seem to be prone to them) and a chance to play a good game of soccer. Some teams might play for the medals, the fans, or the brownies at the end, but we play for the glory of God and for each other, every minute of the game.

Middle School Girls Soccer

The MS Girls Football team continues to play well.  They have displayed such great hustle, teamwork and sportsmanship this season.  Last Wednesday, they welcomed the Buffaloes from RVA and played a tight first half, finishing with a slight lead of 1-0.  The close game continued into the second half until the offense broke through the RVA defense to score 4 more goals.  Our defense was tested but remains unscored on through 7 games.  Abby had the defensive highlight with a great save in the first half.  Joanne scored a hat trick and Karen added 2 more goals to keep up the offensive pressure.

The bands and choirs are preparing for a very busy spring semester.  These are the activities that are coming up.

Thursday March 1, 2012:

Pre-Evaluation Concert – 6:30 PM – MS Symphonic Band, HS Wind Ensemble, 6^th Grade Choir, 7^th & 8^th Grade Choir and Rosslyn Singers – Rosslyn Theatre

Tuesday March 6, 2012 – Rosslyn Concert Festival – The five ensembles that performed on Thursday night will perform before a panel of adjudicators for their annual evaluation.  Other schools are also planning to participate in this event.

HS Wind Ensemble with Global Missions Project tour of Nairobi.  Itinerary is still in progress and will be updated on the school website when changes are made.  Currently students will only be missing 2 days of school, Monday and Tuesday March 12-13, 2012.  All student who will be going must have a B or higher in all Classes (C or higher for AP classes).  Students who do not have the minimum grades will not be doing the tour.

The Sound of Music is coming to Rosslyn Academy in April.  Dates are April 19, 20, 21, 26, 27 and 28, 2012.  Details concerning late rehearsals and tickets will be coming soon.

“Older” kitty needs a nice quiet home, for six months or permanently. We are going away from late May until early January ‘13 and are looking for a temporary or permanent new home for our white and orange tabby cat who will turn 9 this summer. He is neutered, current on vaccinations, in good health, set in his ways, and every inch a cat (cat lovers will know what this means.) He is friendly, sits in laps on occasion, likes to be petted when he is awake and combed while he eats, loves his food dish. He likes to have a quiet place to sleep, but to be near “his people” when he is awake. He does not scratch furniture or steal food in the kitchen, and is quiet around the house, but may wake you up wanting to come in in the morning (unless you have a “kitty door” (or a kitty window) for him to go in and out.) He is an indoor (during most of the daytime, when he sleeps) and outdoor (at night) cat, and a very poor fighter, which means he needs to live in an environment where he is sheltered from other cats (and unfriendly dogs) when he is outside. He is very shy with strangers (especially outdoors) and not used to small children. He eats only commercial cat food, and does not eat “people food”. Van Reken is a second generation Third Culture Kid* (TCK) and mother of three grown TCKs.  For the last 25 years, she has worked extensively with those who also grew up among many cultures, helping them to understand and use the gifts of their background while dealing productively with its challenges. 

Ruth speaks internationally to parents, human resource professionals, educators, and other caregivers on how they can recognize and develop the strengths of a cross-cultural childhood.  She is co-founder of the annual Families in Global Transition conference, and we are pleased to welcome her to Rosslyn Academy! 

Ruth will be offering a parent session on Tuesday, February 28th from 4-5:30 PM in the Rosslyn Academy auditorium.  This is a special event and a unique opportunity to interact with an internationally known expert on issues essential to our families.

It is always very encouraging when we students take initiative for causes that are focused on making a difference in the lives of others.  This year, students from both the Student Leadership Team (SLT) and the National Honor Society (NHS) are joining forces and partnering with an organization called Operation Smile. Operation Smile is an international children’s medical charity that heals children’s smiles, forever changing their lives.  Operation Smile mobilizes a force of volunteers and medical professionals and caring hearts who provide safe, effective reconstructive surgery for children born with facial deformities such as cleft lip and cleft palate.  

Did you know that every three minutes a child is born with a cleft — often unable to eat, speak, socialize or even smile?  In some places these children are shunned and rejected. And in too many cases, their parents can’t afford to give them the surgeries they need to live a normal life. This is where our Rosslyn students and community will help.  Between now and April, the SLT and NHS will be conducting fundraisers that will be used to fund operations for Kenyan children who are born with this condition.  In mid-April, some of our students will join with a team of medical professionals and travel to Mount Kenya area and participate in a 4 day camp to restore the smile of many children.  What a tremendous opportunity to be God’s hand extended to these Kenyan children and families.  Please join us in raising as much money as we can for this very worthy student-led initiative.   

This week I would like to highlight another member of our faculty Student Life Network (SLN).  In only her second year at Rosslyn Academy, as guidance counselor, Ms. Tiffany Singleton has made a tremendous positive impact on the High School students and has been “spring of knowledge” for parents.  Working extensively with juniors and seniors she helps families navigate the, at times rough and unclear, student’s journey to College/University.  Not only does her advice pay off with excellent college acceptance rates (throughout the world), she is responsible for helping students secure millions of dollars in scholarships!  Although Tiffany is very knowledgeable in planning student’s future, what makes her special is her genuine care and concern for students.  When asked about Ms. Singleton, a group of seniors immediately stated “she cares”, “she is encouraging and inspiring” and “I would not be going to college if it were not for her”.  If you have any questions regarding college preparation for your Rosslyn student, feel free to contact her at TiffanyS@rosslynacademy.com

High School News

Dear Parents of High School Students,

May I brag on my wife in this Rosslyn Reporter? I hope you said, “Yes.”   Today in the Middle and High School chapel, she was the speaker.  She is a prayer warrior and intercessor.  She always arises before the sun and prays for people, for situations, and for Jesus to be glorified.  She has cultivated a life of prayer…she prays without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:16). 

Today in High School chapel, she brought a message that reminded our students of our Father’s sovereignty…and she told our seniors and juniors that you have life changing decisions on the horizon.  With large decisions looming on their horizon, she encouraged them with 3 points.  The first was that “a man’s steps are ordered of the Lord” (Proverbs 20:24) and that “it is not for man to direct his steps (Jeremiah 10:23).  The second was that the Lord has plans for us, which are plans to prosper us and not to harm us, plans to give us hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11-14).  Finally, she reminded all of us that “in all things God works for the good of those who love him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).  She shared intimately through her own personal life story how her Father has directed her steps even when she did not realize it; how He had a plan to prosper her to give her a hope and a future even when it was not what she thought; how He had worked all things for the good again even when it went against what she wanted.  She closed by telling our students that He is intimately acquainted with all their ways…everything about them.  Their life may seem frazzled, chaotic, and random, but He is there unfolding His plan in them and around them. 

I would ask you to inquire of your students tonight or the next day or so on what she said. 

On a different, but very important topic, I would like to tell you that next week is Teacher Appreciation Week at Rosslyn.  May I strongly encourage you to tell your children to write a note of appreciation to two of their teachers and to deliver them next week?   Gifts of appreciation are nice and teachers are always grateful for a piece of chocolate or some other goody.  Yet, there is nothing that replaces the gift of an encouraging word that they have made a difference.  I know hand written notes are almost a thing of the past, but the time invested in a handwritten note does have a higher value to it.

In closing, I want to share one more experience that I so thoroughly enjoyed this week.  I visited the EAMUN for High Schools this week at the UNEP compound.  I was so impressed with our students and students from all across East Africa.  It really does showcase the next generation of leaders.  To see students stand up to debate, analyze, think critically, and make decisions on topics that affect countries and their world was just amazing.  Our RA MUN team did a fine job.

Persevering Parents,

Thank you to class 5B who led us in chapel yesterday, and helped us think more about ways that Elementary School students can exercise patience.  Good job!

Next week (Feb. 20-23) is Rosslyn Appreciation Week.  The Parent Teacher Fellowship (PTF) is planning all sorts of treats and events to honor the people who teach and serve your children at school.  Please contact the PTF (ptf@rosslynacademy.com) to find out more about how you can help bless the teachers and staff and communicate your gratitude for the important role they play in loving and educating your children.  Thank you, in advance, parents, for doing so much to love and bless our teachers and staff.  It is SO encouraging and significant to know that you notice and care!

Spiritual Emphasis Week is coming, March 12-18.  We will be learning about Jesus through a “Beach Bash” theme.  This runs like a Vacation Bible School program in the afternoons (1:00 – 3:30 PM) for all Elementary School students.  If you are available to volunteer any or all of the afternoons, or have questions, please let Claude Kranik know: ClaudeK@RosslynAcademy.com  Also, we will be doing a craft that week which requires small boxes.  If you have any empty tea boxes (the small 50 bag type) or the clear plastic container with a hinged lid (from strawberries and grapes), please send them in empty and clean with your child to the ES office.  Thank you!

Guidance Corner

AP EXAM REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT:  AP registration forms and money must come to the Guidance Office by the March 1^st deadline. Extra forms are available in the Guidance Office.  

GRADE 9 – TERRANOVA TESTING:  All Grade 9 students will take the TerraNova Achievement Test on Wednesday, March 7^th, and Thursday, March 8^th. The test will occur during the morning block periods on both days. No registration needed. TerraNova is a series of standardized achievement tests designed to assess student achievement in reading, language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, vocabulary, spelling, and other areas.

FAFSA APPLICATIONS:  All US citizens and permanent residents who are applying to US universities are eligible to complete the FAFSA forms.  This Federal Financial Aid form for the 2012-2013 college entrance is available online beginning January 1.  Parents may go online ahead of January 1 and register to receive a PIN number.  In the Senior College Handbook is a specific list of all documents and protocols needed to finish the FAFSA.  (See “Financial Aid Fact Sheet.”) Students will not be able to receive any federal grants or loans without a complete FAFSA application.

ROSSLYN ACADEMY SWIMMING POOL USAGE FEES

We would like to remind all our esteemed families who wish to use the swimming pool facilities that there are fees assigned to this usage.  (This is not a new policy – it has been in place since the pool opened.  However, not all swimmers have been properly informed of this policy.)

Fee payment entitles individuals and/or family members who have a student currently enrolled at Rosslyn Academy to make use of the swimming pool facilities during designated hours.  Non-members are not allowed to use the pool.

For families who have at least one student currently enrolled at Rosslyn Academy, the fee for the whole calendar year is $125 per family, or $63 per family for half a calendar year, to be paid in the business office.

Once payment has been made, the member family will be issued a “Pool Pass” which must be brought to the pool and shown to the pool staff for entry.  No users shall be admitted to the pool without showing a valid, current pool pass.

Paying members may invite up to one guest per family member, at a fee of 100 ksh per guest per day.   Guests may come to the pool only when accompanied by the member who invited them.  The guest pass booklet is available at the business office for 1000 ksh, and it contains 10 guest passes.

Elementary SEW – Son Surf Beach Bash

I want to thank the parents that have responded to the volunteer sign-up sheet for our SEW week.  We now have a snack coordinator and all our craft and beach game stations are filled.  We are still in need of family group leaders and servers for snacks.  Please email if you would be willing to help out in those areas.  If you can’t come every day, that’s okay, just let me know which days you would be available to help out.

For a craft, we need:

•  small empty tea bag boxes (25-50 bag size) 
•  empty clear plastic containers with flip-up lid that once held grapes or strawberries

  If you can save those and send them in with your child that will be a big help.  

For decorations we need:

• surf boards,
• fish nets with floating buoys,
• fishing poles,
• beach umbrellas (especially the kind attached to a beach chair), 
• nautical rope (the wide hemp rope used to tie up boats),
• beach pails and shovels,
• gazebo/canopy tents 

If you can lend us any of those items, please send them in with your child.  Please remember to put your name on them so we can be sure to return them to you.  Thanks again for all your help.

Tickets are on sale now in the high school office for the Middle School non-play, “30 Reasons NOT to be in a Play.”  This is not a play…it’s a message…it’s a warning.  Actually, it is 30 teachable moments of reasons why you should never consider being in a play.  Reasons like this:  You may turn into a dog; you may cause a terrible storm to develop halfway across the world; you’ll pass out from talking too fast; AND our entire civilized world might….well, I’ll let you find out for yourself.

The school is embarking on a project to design and print an advertising brochure to publicize Rosslyn Academy.  Jeff Kirkpatrick will be doing the photography and he needs your help for the following opportunities.

1.  Looking for someone who lives or works in a building that has a view over parts of the city that show that Nairobi is in fact a “Garden City in the Sun”, and that can provide access to Jeff for a short photo shoot.

2.  One of the pages in the brochure will emphasize our alumni’s involvement in “the World Community”.  Jeff is looking for willing Alumni working within Kenya who would be accessible for photography that would show them involved in their diverse lines of vocation.  This could be anything from Community Development to Business to Medicine etc.

Rosslyn Appreciation Week February 20^th to 23^rd

Tuesday 21^st: Cookies needed, please deliver to Kitchen in Main Building by 8.30 am

Wednesday 22^nd: Please send a “token of appreciation” for All your teachers, (A note, a flower, a candy, a gift, whatever you feel will appreciate your teachers!) This is for ALL your teachers.

For Elementary there will be baskets in the Classrooms, and Middle School and High School, there will be a table outside the Auditorium with Bags with the Teachers’ name on it, where the student can drop in their “token”, or they can give directly to the Teacher too!

Thursday 23^rd: PTF would appreciate a Salad for the Staff Luncheon, delivery at Tent by 10.00 am.

HS/MS ~~ The green steel cages near the coke machine, boonies and MS store are for items to be recycled.  This includes the following:

Plastic (hard) containers (not bags, or wrappings), Metal cans, Glass Bottles.  Do not use them for regular trash.  Also, please do your part and rinse out the containers before placing them in the cages to minimize pests.

Over the February 11-12 weekend, Jamie, Jessica and Melissa Dunning and Jennifer Watson visited one of the recipients of this year’s Christmas Project — Village Project Africa in Makutano. While they were there, they were able to see the current progress of the cow project that was funded through the Christmas Project.

Ruth E. Van Reken is a second generation Third Culture Kid* (TCK) and mother of three grown TCKs. For the last 25 years, she has worked extensively with those who also grew up among many cultures, helping them to understand and use the gifts of their background while dealing productively with its challenges. Ruth speaks internationally to parents, human resource professionals, educators, and other caregivers on how they can recognize and develop the strengths of a cross-cultural childhood.

She is co-founder of the annual Families in Global Transition conference, and we are pleased to welcome her to Rosslyn Academy! In addition to leading our February 27th teacher inservice day, Ruth will be offering a parent session on Tuesday, February 28th from 4-5:30 PM in the Rosslyn auditorium. This is a special event and a unique opportunity to interact with an internationally known expert on issues essential to our families. All are welcome!
