A Christian International school in Nairobi, Kenya

Christmas is a time when we pause to reflect on the love and compassion of our Lord.  At Rosslyn we celebrate this season by showing that same love and compassion to others.  Romans 12:13 tells us to “share with the Lord’s people who are in need.”  As an extremely blessed community, we join together each Christmas in an effort to bless others.

This Year’s Projects

This year we are raising money to support three projects: Hosanna Projects for the Destitute, Ahadi Boys’ Home and One Lamb.

Hosanna Projects for the Destitute is a children’s home in Githunguri, Kenya.  Hosanna is home to 61 children, as well a community primary school and church.  Hosanna Projects for the Destitute seeks to provide a safe and supportive environment for orphans and vulnerable children while also aiming to produce God-fearing citizens through advocacy and empowerment.

Ahadi Boys’ Home is located in Runda and is home to 14 young boys, all of whom are former street children.  The home’s purpose is to take boys from the street and rehabilitate them into God fearing young men who will strive to honor Him in all they do; and into good citizens who will work together to build a better Kenya. They focus heavily on sports as an avenue to find scholarships, and have recently added an Arts component.

One Lamb is an organization that seeks to address the status of child prostitution in Kenyan communities.   One Lamb currently works with children at Undugu School in Majengo Slum in Nairobi.  Through Bible and Art classes they are able to build relationships with students and identify those who have been abused in this way.  They also provide sanitary pads to those in the slum who have the need.

Our Goals

  1. 100% participation from our students and staff
  2. Raise 800,000Ksh for these three organizations
  3. Collect specific items needed by each ministry

Ways to Give

  1. Cash Envelope – All teachers have cash containers ready to receive your donations at any time.
  2. Offering Boxes – At all Fine Arts performances we will be collecting cash and other donated items that will go toward meeting our goal.
  3. Collection Boxes – You may send in the suggested items at any time from now until Christmas break. We will have collection boxes for these donated items in the Media Center, the Elementary Library and the Administration Building reception area.

For those residing outside Kenya, gifts may be made out to Rosslyn Academy and mailed to Rosslyn Christmas Project, c/o Mr. Dan King, 1785 Pleasant Stream Road, Trout Run, Pennsylvania, 17771, USA. Mr. King will issue receipts.

Rosslyn is pleased to announce our launch with Naviance, a web based resource for staff and students that encourages and supports post high school career and college planning.

Students can log in and request transcripts and teacher recommendations for college aps, and teachers can log in to upload teacher recommendations for college. Naviance also supports additional capabilities that we look forward to leveraging in the future, including career and college planning.

Dear Elementary School Families,

The finish line is in sight!!  By God’s grace, we are finishing strong!  Please note that the last two days of school, May 29 and 30, are both half days, with students dismissed at noon.

Yesterday was our “transition chapel”.  Miss Johnson reminded us that whether we are moving away from Rosslyn Academy, or saying good-bye to friends who are moving, or moving from elementary school to middle school, or facing other changes, we can face change without fear, and can “sniff out the new cheese”!  (Ask your child to explain.)

All library books are now past due.  Please check now to see if your child has any overdue books or fines so that you can be sure they will receive their final report card and yearbook.  Our librarian, Mrs. Gitonga, can be reached at: AngelaG@RosslynAcademy.com

Coming up:

May 24  Last day of school for preschool students only

May 29  Fifth Grade promotion ceremony (10:30 am)

Half day for students — noon dismissal (for all students K to 12)

Terra Nova standardized testing results come home

May 30  Last day of school – half day (noon dismissal) for all students K to 12

Report cards come home

Joyfully,

Kim Gilmer

This summer, I am challenging you to read for “Library Dollars”!

Rosslyn Academy Elementary Students will earn one “library dollar” for each book read during the June/July Break.  Please read books which are interesting and challenging to you, and record them on the attached form.  The maximum number of “library dollars” you can earn in this program is 50.  (But please do keep reading after reaching that amount!!)

During the first week of School (August 12th-16th), I will pay you with “library dollars” for the number of books you have read over the June/July break.   Then you will come “shopping” at Mrs. Gitonga’s Library Store.  The prizes you can buy with your “library dollars” include books, coupons to Planet Yogurt, and other exciting items.

During June and July, the elementary school library will be open only on the following Wednesdays from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm.

June 12th, 2013              July 3rd, 2013

June 19th, 2013              July 10th, 2013

June 26th, 2013              July 17th, 2013

The students who travel out of the country can also participate by reading books from their nearest libraries.

Please have your parents sign on the form for each book read and return the form to Mrs. Kariuki or me during the holiday, or bring back the form the first week of school (on August 12th or 13th).

I am looking forward to seeing some of you in the library during the summer break.

Happy reading!!!

Mrs. Gitonga,

For Algebra-1 and Geometry: A scientific (non-graphing) calculator is sufficient. These can be found locally for about Ksh 1000/=.

For Algebra-2 and above: Students are required to have a Texas Instruments TI-84+ (or better) graphing calculator. This is the most commonly used calculator in North American schools but it is difficult to find locally. If you do not have a way of getting one from North America, we have some available for purchase from the school.

For pricing and more detailed information about the various graphing calculator models, see the handout that was sent home this week with students.
