Arts

Rosslyn believes participation in the arts is key to providing a well-rounded educational experience. Students have many opportunities to participate in the arts at every age and grade level. Participating in the wide range of fine arts offerings opens the eyes of our students to a new world of creativity and exploration.

Elementary

Art is a required component of the academic program at each grade level within the Elementary School. The visual arts program encourages creative, aesthetic growth for all students. We offer a comprehensive program that inspires every student toward visual competency and art appreciation, as well as adequately preparing art students for future art learning and experiences.

Music is also a required component of the academic program at each grade level within the Elementary School. Here students learn about music itself, the various types/kinds of music, and musical notation. African music and worship music are deliberately included as key components of the music program. In 4th grade, students are introduced to the recorder (a flute-like instrument). In 5th grade, students take introductory band, drama and dance mini-courses. All elementary students perform concerts each semester of the academic year. In addition to this, there is a yearly school-wide talent show and an Elementary School talent show that give students the opportunity to display their additional talents.

Middle School

In Middle School students continue the exploration of various fine arts courses so that when they reach High School they have a better idea of the specialized elective courses they would like to take.

All Middle School students participate in Choir or Band for half of each academic year. These classes are excellent preparation for High School Band and Choir. Each student also takes a six week course in Art. Middle School students also have the choice of enrolling in an optional drama class that meets once a week.

In addition to this, students have the opportunity to audition for the Middle School worship team. These teams lead worship for the weekly chapel service.

All students have the option to take private voice or instrument lessons on campus as well.

High School

With Rosslyn Academy’s vision to equip, inspire and celebrate the artistic development of each student, each student must earn 1.5 credits in the Fine Arts and .5 of a credit in Applied Arts as part of their high school graduation requirements. Students select from over 20 different electives offerings.

Outside of class, students also have many opportunities to participate in the arts. The theater department stages two productions each year, a stage play and a musical. Recent productions include Our Town, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, 12 Angry Men, Les Misérables, Annie, and In the Heights. The productions incorporate detailed staging, costuming, and lighting. Students participate as actors, singers, dancers, stagehands, set and costume designers, lighting and sound technicians, and student directors. Months of practice and preparation culminate in multiple nights of sold out shows that speak to the quality of the acting and production.

Students also have the opportunity to audition for the high school worship team. These teams lead worship for the weekly high school chapel service.

All students have the option to take private voice or instrument lessons on campus.
