Hello parents! In the event that we need to go to VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) due to political unrest in the coming weeks, this will be the place to get up-to-date information relative to your child’s elementary educational programming at Rosslyn Academy Elementary School.
Point of Contact & Communication: If you have any questions regarding your child’s VLE learning, please get in contact with the homeroom teacher via email. This is your first point of contact. If, for some reason, you cannot get a hold of your child’s homeroom teacher, please email me, your Elementary Principal, at markb@rosslynacademy.com. Any changes to the modes of learning will come from the homeroom teacher and/or myself, the Principal. We will keep you informed.
Partnership: The connection between school and home is important, and during a time of potential political unrest, that connection is even more essential. As we navigate the potential to go on VLE, our desire as an Elementary school is to partner with parents to offer the best possible education while in an online environment. Although we know that in-person affords the most versatile learning environment for most students, we have gained many skills as educators to deliver as best an educational experience as possible while online. That being said, we humbly call on parents to partner with us as we navigate the next number of weeks to support the learning of your child. Guiding elementary students takes time and energy, and we want to partner with you to help our students access the online resources and activities as best as possible if the case arises.
Morning Meeting: In the event we need to go to VLE, every Elementary homeroom classroom will have a Morning Meeting each morning at the following times listed below via the Google Classroom learning platform:
- Grade 3, 4, and 5: "Morning Meeting" at 9:00 - 9:30am.
- Kindergarten, Grade 1 & 2: "Morning Meeting" at 9:30 - 10:00am.
- Preschool: Miss Hannah Myers will be in communication with you regarding learning and meeting times during VLE.
After the “Morning Meeting”: Immediately following the Morning Meeting, teachers will outline how learning will take place for the remainder of the day. It is our desire that students can be active as much as possible during VLE and are not stuck behind a screen for the entire day. As directed by the homeroom teacher, learning activities will be posted on Google Classroom. Students will need to access these activities throughout the day as guided by the teacher. The students will not be required to sit in front of their computer screens for the entire day. Teachers may touch base with individual students, small groups of students, or the entire class throughout the day at different times if need be using Google Classroom.
Reach Out: If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s homeroom teacher. If you cannot get a hold of them, please feel free to email me at markb@rosslyacademy.com.
Your Principal,
Mark Blankenstyn
Rosslyn Academy’s high standard of academic excellence, spiritual formation, and student support will continue during VLE. Whether students are online or in the classroom, we care deeply about student learning and spiritual growth.
In general, middle school students are ready to take ownership of their learning while online. Parents can partner with Rosslyn by ensuring that their student has access to the required technology (a computer/laptop with a camera) and a dedicated learning space at home where they can responsibly attend to their learning. If at all possible, it works well to have this space in an area where they can be casually monitored by an adult to encourage on-task behavior.
In middle school, VLE may involve components of synchronous instruction (real-time, online live instruction through web conferencing tools) and/or asynchronous instruction (Access to course materials through Google Classroom, Rosslyn’s learning management system).
When Rosslyn Academy enters into VLE, further communication will come by email that outlines more specific details, student expectations, and support available.
