Arts

Rosslyn believes participation in the arts is key to providing a well-rounded educational experience. Students have many opportunities to participate in the arts at every age and grade level. Participating in the wide range of fine arts offerings opens the eyes of our students to a new world of creativity and exploration.

Elementary

Art is a required component of the elementary school’s academic program at each grade level. The visual arts program encourages creative, aesthetic growth for all students. We offer a comprehensive program that inspires every student toward visual competency and art appreciation, as well as adequately preparing students for future art learning and experiences.

Music is also a required component of the elementary school’s academic program at each grade level. Here, students learn about music itself, the various types/kinds of music, and musical notation. African music and worship music are deliberately included as key components of the music program. In 4th grade, students are introduced to the recorder (a flute-like instrument). All elementary students perform in a concert each academic year. In addition, there is a yearly school-wide talent show that gives students the opportunity to display their additional talents.  Elementary students also have the chance to join an after-school drama club when offered.

All students have the option to take private voice or instrument lessons on campus, but these do require an additional fee that is paid by the parents or guardians.

Middle School

In Middle School, students continue the exploration of various fine arts courses so that when they reach High School, they have a better idea of the specialized elective courses they would like to take. All Middle School students participate in Choir or Band each academic year. These classes are excellent preparation for High School Band and Choir. Each student also takes a semester-long course in Art each year of Middle School. Middle School students also have the opportunity to audition for and participate in the Middle School play.

Students participate as actors, stagehands, set and costume designers, lighting and sound technicians, and student directors. All are welcome and encouraged to join, experienced or not. In addition to this, students have the opportunity to audition for the Middle School worship team as a vocalist or instrumentalist. These teams lead worship for the weekly chapel service. All students have the option to take private voice or instrument lessons on campus, but these do require an additional fee that is paid by the parents or guardians.

High School

With Rosslyn Academy’s vision to equip, inspire, and celebrate the artistic development of each student, each student must earn 1.5 credits in the fine arts and .5 credits in applied arts as part of their high school graduation requirements. Students select from over 30 different electives offerings.  These include but are not limited to Culinary Arts, Woodworking, Digital Design, Band, Choir, Introduction Theater and many more.

Outside of class, students also have many opportunities to participate in the arts. The theater department stages two productions each year: a stage play and a musical, and over 100 students participate in the productions. The productions incorporate detailed staging, costuming, and lighting. Students participate as actors, singers, dancers, stagehands, set and costume designers, lighting and sound technicians, and student directors. Months of practice and preparation culminate in multiple nights of sold-out shows that speak to the quality of the acting and production.  The quality of these productions has also gained the attention of the Kenya Theater Awards, and as a result, Rosslyn has received many nominations.  The power of storytelling shines through in each production and is another way that Rosslyn students honor God through their gifts and abilities.

Students also have the opportunity to audition for the high school worship team as vocalists or instrumentalists. These teams lead worship for the weekly high school chapel service. All students have the option to take private voice or instrument lessons on campus, but these do require an additional fee that is paid by the parents or guardians.
